The AI Hype Hangover: Moving from AI First Slogans to Actually Finding a Use Case That Justifies the Q2 Budget

There was a moment when every company declared itself AI first.

It was bold. It was exciting. It was also, in many cases, completely undefined.

Now we are in the aftermath.

Budgets have been allocated. Expectations have been set. And leaders are being asked a very practical question.

What are we actually doing with AI.

The Shift from Vision to Value

Vision is easy. Value is harder.

Saying you are AI first signals ambition. Delivering measurable outcomes requires clarity, discipline, and often a willingness to scale back initial expectations.

The most successful organizations are not the ones doing the most with AI.

They are the ones doing the right things.

Identifying Real Use Cases

Not every problem needs AI.

In fact, applying AI where simpler solutions would work can create unnecessary complexity.

Start with pain points.

Where are teams spending excessive time. Where are errors common. Where is decision making slow.

These are the areas where AI can potentially add value.

For example, automating routine data analysis or improving customer support response times.

These are practical, measurable, and aligned with business needs.

Avoiding the Shiny Object Trap

AI can do impressive things. But impressive does not always mean useful.

A sophisticated model that does not integrate well into existing workflows will not deliver value.

Focus on adoption.

If people are not using it, it does not matter how advanced it is.

Integration, usability, and training are just as important as the technology itself.

Measuring Success

Success should be defined upfront.

Are you reducing time spent on certain tasks. Improving accuracy. Increasing customer satisfaction.

Without clear metrics, it is difficult to assess whether your AI initiatives are delivering value.

And without that, it is difficult to justify continued investment.

Leading with Realism

As a leader, your role is to balance optimism with realism.

AI has significant potential. But it is not a solution to every problem.

Being honest about what it can and cannot do builds credibility.

And credibility is essential when navigating emerging technologies.

Final Thought

The hype phase is over.

Now it is about execution.

And the organizations that succeed will be the ones that focus less on being AI first and more on being value driven.
